White (Rosy) Pelicans in Kerkini
There always used to be 1 or 2 great white pelicans (Pelicanus onocrotalus) among the flock of Dalmatian pelicans on Lake Kerkini. But this time we counted 4 or 5 and they showed up much more so that we had plenty opportunities to photograph them without the Dalmatian pelicans around. During mating season their feathers look rosy that's why in German they are called rosy pelicans. They are just about the size of the Dalmatian pelicans and live in rather peaceful coexistence with them. Their original colony lies further to the northwest of Greece on Lake Prespa with around 100 pairs.
