Icelandic "Réttir"-
or Bringing Home the Sheep

During my Icelandic Highland tour we had the opportunity to photograph the "Réttir", the driving home of the sheep from the Highland.

There are about 400.000 sheep in Iceland. At the beginning of May the lambs are born and only a few weeks later the sheep are being driven into the Highland where they live freely for more than two months. In September all over the country the sheep are collected and driven back home by horse, quads and by foot. The réttir ends with a big party for all helpers and owners where the sheep are sorted with the help of the "réttirs" which actually are wooden round enclosures where the different herds are seperated.
